This post is part of the Friday Q&A section. If you want to ask a question, just write a comment below.

Arwen Taylor asks:

I wondered if you could talk about “Personality” blogs. These are blogs that people have built solely based around their personality and things happening in their life. An example of this would be Dooce.com and TheBloggess.com.

What do you think it takes to build that type of following? Do you think that is a viable business model? To become Internet famous and then profit off that fame?

I think there are two categories of personal blogs (i.e., a blog that gravitates around the personal life of the author himself and his experiences) that end up becoming popular and making a lot of money for the author (if he decided to monetize it)

The first one refers to the bloggers who were already famous before they jumped on the web. This includes television and movie celebrities, sport celebrities, music celebrities, business celebrities and so on. These people already have a big following, so if they start writing a blog tomorrow, regardless of the topic and content, many people will want to read.

The second category refers to bloggers who were not famous before starting their blogs, but who are incredibly funny, or incredibly insightful, or live an incredibly interesting life, or preferably all of these.

The two examples you mentioned fall in this second category. I am not a reader of either blog, but after a quick visit to the first one you realize the author has many interesting experiences to share, while the second blog is plain hilarious.

If you fall into one of these categories and like to write, then perhaps you could create a viable business model out of it.

However, I still think that creating a popular blog on a specific niche is much easier and can be much more profitable. It is easier your visitors will understand upfront what your blog is about, and whether or not they are interested in it. It can be much more profitable because by focusing on a specific topic you’ll be able to find advertisers and sell products more efficiently.

But what about you, do you think that personal blogs can be a viable business model? Would you try to build one?

To increase web site visibility to search engines. In relation with the first reason on why blogs are important, search engine visibility is greatly increased by the number of responses and unique users visiting a website or blog. Because content in blogs are updated constantly, search engines are able to index a blog quickly.

To build customer devotion. Blogs are equipped with an interactive concept for online users to share thoughts and ideas about a particular subject. This would prompt users to follow the discussion and visit the site consistently to follow-up for more additional updates.

To gain information about competitor’s strategies. Gaining competitive intelligence about competitor’s means of marketing can be done by searching for other blogs related to your field of business. This is mainly because blogs allow a user to openly react or state an idea or thought. This in turn helps you realize other potential strategies and tactics to do to promote the growth of your online business.

To serve as a tool for customer service. Blogs are basically interactive. If internet users and customers know that a web site is dedicated to providing consistent customer support to their users, the potential for acquiring loyal customers increases.

To promote advertisement and campaigns. Because blogs do not need to go through long and intensive reviews compared to submitting articles to article submission sites, it is possible to instantly post whatever you want to post and receive immediate results. Blog posting is free for all internet users therefore, it is much easier to display your campaigns and advertisements as a discrete form of blog post.

It is a wise move to see blogs as a two-faced rising trend but not ignore the fact that there are potential benefits blogging can do for an online business. Everything has its pros and cons and it is advisable that before pursuing something, you must have the necessary background as to what method of marketing you are going to use. The bottom-line is – blogging, if properly utilized and managed, can serve as a great marketing tool option for any online business.

The title of every blog post is the most important element of an article. The importance of a well written title and it’s big role in obtaining better Google ranking and also being the main element that could make the readers click on your article is what we are about to discuss in a moment. This is what you have to do for better ranking in search engines.

The reason why the title of an article plays such a major role is because nowadays readers have RSS readers and they will receive the titles and a snippet from the latest articles on every blog they are tracking. Some people track so many blogs and to have a chance to get your article to be read you need a catchy title and a smart first paragraph.

The purpose of a good title should determine the reader to click on the article and read the first paragraph. So, think of your titles as the most important thing you could do for your content. As this is the thing that make people click on your article and read the first paragraph.

To create great titles, firstly, promise some kind of benefit. People will always want to look for ways that could help them. So, if they can achieve whatever they are after by following a few easy steps then for sure they’ll give it a try. The benefit you promise should be also present in the first paragraph.

Secondly, your titles should portray something different. What I mean here is a title that sounds different or creates a rare analogy. Next, begin with a number which will help to transmit a clear image about how many things you can learn. Any number above 5 but smaller than 13 will be great.

If you ask people to take an action, to do something and you also promise a benefit if they’re doing it then you have a killer combination. There are certain words that will increase your chances of getting your title to be clicked so always remember to use the words that will attract readers to click!

Using both the pros as well as the cons on articles like “How to” and “How not to” can let you explore different angles and will make your articles more interesting. Lastly, if possible, mention the name of a well known and popular person in your article or rather somehow the person can relate to your article. In this way, there will be something for the readers to read it. Before doing so, you will have to ask for permission before using the person in your article.

Recently, blogs and social media have become increasingly popular for business and political reasons. As the social networking sites has already very much grown and exploded in the years, it has become useful as a marketing tool, as well a channel for reaching out to more and more people. The sheer number of people on social media such as Facebook and MySpace is a powerful force to be reckoned with if they come together for common purposes. For example, a protest against issues online can quickly gain supporters, until such a significant number that the group can together steer important political and corporate decisions.

Blogs are quickly invading the world of media. Conventional media such as magazines and newspapers frequently have columns written by bloggers, which can be found on their blogs. This shows the recognition of blogs as a new source of information and communication. For some people, blogging is their careers and they are actually paid to blog. At the same time, more business entities are seeking the help of new companies that aid in social media optimisation to create their own blogs, so as to educate and attract more traffic to their main, money-making websites. Companies who does not do so are losing out, to say the least.

Although a lot of blogs have very small traffic, the power of the blog community lies in the sheer number of blogs. WordPress.com alone has over 4 millions blogs and still growing fast. When the numbers are worked out, they represent a significant portion of media. The reason blogs are popular is because of personal approach to writing. Unlike the standard news whereby the spokesperson look expressionless regardless of the mood of the news he or she is reporting, blogs are emotional and personal, and also interactive as well. People can look at blogs and put down their comments, discuss on the subject being blogged. Some blogs even offer forums for engaging discussions. The standard news will never catch up to these.

Blogs have gained great impression from business people. A lot of people have already sought the attention of online social media experts to create a growing online presence for their companies. Using social media like blogs and Facebook, the virtual extension of the business reaches far more effectively than the standard TV and newspaper. Furthermore, the crowd that is attracted is a tad different; only computer-savvy people are reached using this media, and that can be linked to the individual’s education level and thus income. In other words, companies have higher chance to reach their niche groups.

Using social media as a new marketing tool is important in this age where costumers go online to search for what they want. A company without an online presence misses all these tech-savvy prospects. Therefore, the importance of having your online marketing outsourced to experts cannot be stressed enough.
