Step By Step Guide to Destroying Your Online Reputation
It has been awhile since I wrote a blog post and I realized I have a backlog of about 16 posts that I plan to write that never get done. No worries since I promise myself that I will write them over the weekend. (I might have to spread over 2 weeks to complete them) :P
We all know that businesses and professionals are very concern about their online reputation. Most of them will hire agencies to track their reputation and if there are ‘negative’ sentiments, they will try very hard to correct the wrong. However, I do realize there are a certain group of people who will do anything to create publicity, bad publicity.
Recently I read a couple of blog posts about how the owner of Tweet.sg got so mad about people complaining about his ‘twitter updating service’ (apparently it lags when an sms is sent) that he threatens to delete anyone from his database who twplain (using twitter to complain) about it. For those who doesn’t know what Tweet.sg is, its a system that allows you to update your Twitter page with an ’sms’.
Well, obviously after annoucing his intention on Twitter, Tweeples tries to seek for an explaination from the creator. But instead of giving a polite explaination like what all professionals using social media does, he blasts everyone that goes against him and complaining to him.
It doesn’t take a social media expert to predict what happen next. People are retweeting (forwarding twitter post) what he said and blogs are even writing about it. (Read the full story in Daphnemaia and Unique Frequency).
So How to Destroy Your Online Reputation?
- Create a FREE service on a popular platform – Well, this is important because you want alot of people to use your service and talk about it. Free because when people complain to you about your service, you can always say “It’s free, what more do you want?”
- Make everyone pissed off! – I think this is essential ruin to your reputation. You have to make people pissed off, and if you can make people so pissed off and write about you, you have succeed.
- When Shit Happens, Blame Everyone – I think that is what he did. He blame everyone but himself. In his response to the saga, he wrote about the 3 kinds of people. The nice folks (far and few), the ‘pesky people who don’t deserve’ and the busybodies (he is talking about us). Well, only the nice folks escaped his ranting.
So, if you intend to ruin your online reputation or just want to get some bad publicity from social media, do the 3 steps and you might be the most hated person on the web. Cheers!
