Ladies and Gentlemen, please note that there is a FIRST in Singapore on the 12 of Sep 2009. Singapore will be hosting it’s first Twestival in Chinatown this weekend.

What is Twestival?

A Twestival or a Twitter Festival is a global series of events organized by volunteers around the world to raise funds and awareness through Twitter and offline events. The volunteers will be trained in social media engagement and tech integration as well as event organizing. Twestival was started in 2008 by a group of Londoners with the aim of bring people from Twitter together for a bit of fun and a good cause. The initiation is now an annual event that fall on the 10-13 September. Today, over 200 cities worldwide will be participating in Twestival annually and Singapore is one of them.

About Twestival Singapore

Twestival Singapore will be held on the 12 of September between 11am to 2pm at an open field near Chinatown Complex. They will be raising funds for the Children’s Cancer Foundation and their expected target will be $5,000.

As far as I know, there will be games and entertainment involved.

One of the best way of using social media is to raise funds for a cause. Time and time again, social media became the mechanism of getting huge amount of donations from people all around the world. Take Obama’s presidency campaign for example. With the use of new media, he is able to raise half a billion dollars (that is like $500,000,000). Without social media, he might only raise a fraction of it.

Another inspiring story is about a pair of students trying to raise funds for an injured dog they rescued. They use Twitter to annouce their intentions and got $485 in 4 days!

There are numerous non-profit organizations using social media to raise awareness and donations for their causes. Mashable recently blog about how you too can get involve in these honourable activities.

Closer to Home

In the middle of this month, you might have read of a story of a little girl name Charmaine who was suffering from a stage 4 cancer and is fighting for her life. Her only hope of survival is to seek treatment in the US. However, the medical bills estimated will be very costly. Up to US$350k is needed for the trip. The story first broke on 15 Jun and immediately many local organizations and forums swing into action to raise funds for the trip. Online forums like Vr-Zone, Hardwarezone, Today’s Motherhood and other photography forums have also chipped in, with ongoing donation drives.

The story was so heartwarming that even the ex-singapore soccer team annouce that they will be holding a charity football match tonight at the Tampines Stadium.

What will Expeditus Media Be Doing to Help?

We have started a donation drive in both our own community on Facebook as well as on this website. We have created a video and hopefully the video is viral enough that it will get more attention and awareness for the cause. We are still planning for another donation drive and will announce it once the plans are concrete.

With all the news agencies banned from reporting on the protest in Iran, social media have taken a very big role in providing people around the world with first hand accounts of the crisis in the country. Since the protest broke out in mid Jun, many social networking sites including YouTube have provided the platform to allow common people in the country to distribute images, video clips and even organize rallies for the cause.

Thanks to Mashable, We have complied Ten videos that show the situation in Iran right now. Be prepared as some of the videos can be very hard to stomach.

The first rally taken in 13 June in Tehran.

Police got involve with the protestors. You can hear the cries, the screams and alot of angry citizens.

The protest isn’t only happening in Tehran. Protests are being carried out around the world. This video show protest in Paris.

A very emotional video of a woman speaking about the state of her country.

Violence erupted as the Basij Militia open fire at the crowd. The situation is escalating and will be worse in the next few days.

A very disturbing video and if you can’t stomach the gore, don’t watch it.

As more and more people are joining the fight, this video sum up the sheer number of people displease with what is going on in the country.

Conclusion

First we had Thailand in political turmoil. Now we have Iran. You can’t help but wonder what is going on with the world leaders today.

Social media have certainly changed the way we look at the world and it has brought us to a point where there is no way we can hide anything. Yes, Iran tries to ban Facebook, Twitter and global news agencies from distributing information about the protest. But it doesn’t work because people power is stronger than any political forces. As Obama said ever so well, “No force can stop the people who want change”.

Finally, CommunicAsia 2009 is over after 4 days of exhibitions. Went there on Wednesday and there are so many local and foreign delegates walking around the convention hall. Being first time there, I didn’t have much expectations except that I understand there will be a display of great innovative products and services.

I wasn’t disappointed when I saw IDA revealed an LCD TV that allows you to IM (instant message), search for YouTube videos and even send sms to your friends all at the same time. I believe it will be the next generation of television, with social capabilities in it.

Was also walking around till I saw Samsung booth. Their strategy is simple, put all the pretty, sexy models there and entice everyone to the booth. Too bad I did not shoot any Samsung girls that day.

LG too have their booth filled with pretty girls. But they did one better with mascots walking around the convention to drive ‘traffic’ to their booth. How smart. I believe their marketing department might have a lesson or two on internet marketing.

They even have a cool demostration of their newly developed phone.

Yahoo! too have their own booth there . Saw them at Ad:Tech and now at CommunicAsia. This time, they were giving away free drinks (I think its blue berry soda) to those who would just ask.

Finally, the reason I was even there was to man my client’s booth. (Sales pitch began here) Mobie is a new mobile application that allows you to real time information on the go. For example, you can check the que for polyclinic by through your mobile phone before you make a trip down.

Currently, they have more than 30 govt services on Mobie and they are looking to extend the services to private sectors as well. Benefits for users? well, you  may be able to book movie tickets, restaurants or shop directly on your mobile phone.

They are now in beta and are looking for trial users who would want to test out the application and hopefully, provide feedback to them. If you want to check out how cool this application is, visit Mobie.sg to register.

Conclusion on CommunicAsia

I believe CommunicAsia was a resounding success. Though I was told that the attendance have dipped compared to previous events, I don’t see that affecting the organizers. I also learn that besides having a booth there, you have to provide free demonstrations, freebies to the people (very social media). And if you have the budget to splurge on pretty models, please do. It helps.

Hope to be there next year, this time, running my own booth.
