Blogs & Social Media

3 January 2009 283 views One Comment

Recently, blogs and social media have become increasingly popular for business and political reasons. As the social networking sites has already very much grown and exploded in the years, it has become useful as a marketing tool, as well a channel for reaching out to more and more people. The sheer number of people on social media such as Facebook and MySpace is a powerful force to be reckoned with if they come together for common purposes. For example, a protest against issues online can quickly gain supporters, until such a significant number that the group can together steer important political and corporate decisions.

Blogs are quickly invading the world of media. Conventional media such as magazines and newspapers frequently have columns written by bloggers, which can be found on their blogs. This shows the recognition of blogs as a new source of information and communication. For some people, blogging is their careers and they are actually paid to blog. At the same time, more business entities are seeking the help of new companies that aid in social media optimisation to create their own blogs, so as to educate and attract  more traffic to their main, money-making websites. Companies who does not do so are losing out, to say the least.

Although a lot of blogs have very small traffic, the power of the blog community lies in the sheer number of blogs. Wordpress.com alone has over 4 millions blogs and still growing fast. When the numbers are worked out, they represent a significant portion of media. The reason blogs are popular is because of personal approach to writing. Unlike the standard news whereby the spokesperson look expressionless regardless of the mood of the news he or she is reporting, blogs are emotional and personal, and also interactive as well. People can look at blogs and put down their comments, discuss on the subject being blogged. Some blogs even offer forums for engaging discussions. The standard news will never catch up to these.

Blogs have gained great impression from business people. A lot of people have already sought the attention of online social media experts to create a growing online presence for their companies. Using social media like blogs and Facebook, the virtual extension of the business reaches far more effectively than the standard TV and newspaper. Furthermore, the crowd that is attracted is a tad different; only computer-savvy people are reached using this media, and that can be linked to the individual’s education level and thus income. In other words, companies have higher chance to reach their niche groups.

Using social media as a new marketing tool is important in this age where costumers go online to search for what they want. A company without an online presence misses all these tech-savvy prospects. Therefore, the importance of having your online marketing outsourced to experts cannot be stressed enough.

2008 was the self-proclaimed year of Social Media and I think that 2009 will be even better. Blogging is considered part of Social Media and I believe if business don’t use social media they will fall way behind.
